Highlights from Orange County Board of Commissioners (NC)

The Orange County Board of Commissioners reviews strong academic gains in both school districts alongside concerns about Black student graduation rates and a widening enrollment drop from kindergarten through 12th grade. Commissioners hear how a new behavioral health crisis care center and mobile crisis pilot could support students even as fuel costs, school construction debt, and unexpected sales tax refunds signal a challenging budget year ahead.

The Orange County Board of Commissioners joins the Chapel Hill Town Council for a rare joint hearing on rezoning 1641 Old Lystra Road for a new church campus with up to ten homes, including deeply affordable units tied to Peewee Homes. Speakers connect the project to Chapel Hill’s civil rights legacy while raising concerns about Wave Road traffic, dark skies, and future development impacts.

The Orange County Board of Commissioners honors a local farmer’s Harvard fellowship, celebrates public school gains, and hears an OWASA update on drought conditions and PFAS in the water system. The board also reviews case studies and survey results shaping the future of the J Branch rail trail corridor and its economic, environmental, and community impacts.

The Orange County Board of Commissioners reviews early progress on its first strategic plan, highlighting gains in sustainable farming, mental health training, housing, transportation satisfaction, and digital literacy alongside challenges in food security and permanent housing. Commissioners also hear about a new countywide communications plan that treats communication as a core public service, clarifies how leaders should respond to residents, and seeks more accessible, inclusive outreach, including to younger community members.
