School Board debates $48.7 million middle school plan; staff to bring more options Nov. 12

At an Oct. 29 work session, the Alexandria City School Board reviewed four options for relieving middle school crowding, from the adopted $48.7 million plan to convert Jefferson-Houston into a middle school to $237.5 million for two new schools at James K. Polk. Donna Kenley questioned spending on two buildings less than 12 years old; Chief Operating Officer Anthony Peña said updated enrollment figures are coming; Ashley Simpson Baird urged colleagues not to delay the FY 2030 planning money. No vote was taken. Staff will bring a “do nothing” scenario, a modulars-only option and per-school numbers to the Nov. 12 work session. 2mins

  • At the School Board’s Oct. 29 work session on middle school capacity, Ashley Simpson Baird says the “do nothing” scenario is already on the chart, addresses the Jefferson-Houston families who oppose ending the school’s elementary grades, and urges colleagues not to let requests for more information push back the FY 2030 planning money for the Patrick Henry and Jefferson-Houston conversions.
